This analysis of the kaleidoscopic world of the 19th-century Caribbean and the literary and cultural transfers that took place during thattime offers completely new insights into early processes of cultural globalization. Racist discourses, established models of “white” abolitionists, the politics of memory, and the previously ignored importance of the Haitian revolution come together to form an amalgam that challenges the traditional notion of a purely Western modernity. Jahrhundert erlaubt, über literarische und kulturelle Transprozesse in jener Epoche,gänzlich neue Einsichten in frühe Prozesse kultureller Globalisierung. Rassistische Diskurse, etablierte Modelle ‚weißer‘ Abolitionisten, Erinnerungspolitiken und die bisher kaum wahrgenommene Rolle der haitianischen Revolution verbinden sich zu einem Amalgam, das unser gängiges Konzept einer genuin westlichen Moderne infrage stellt.
