This reorganization of an earlier book, The Burning Oracle, by the same author, also incorporates an abbreviation of Chariot of Wrath, the author's war book on Milton as a national prophet, was originally published in 1967 by Methuen & Co., Ltd. The four major writers discussed within this volume (Spenser, Milton, Swift, and Byron) are narrative artists deeply concerned with action; external action as an expression of man's dynamic being, with an activating core of sexual instincts. The author argues that each of these writers had governmental and political interests and experience, utilizing their literary genius as they were geared to national or international action. This volume will be useful as a supplementary text for courses in literary interpretation and criticism.
G. Wilson Knight was Emeritus Professor of Literature at Leeds University in England. He was the author of numerous books, among them Shakespearian Production, The Christian Renaissance, Symbol of Man, and Shakespeare's Dramatic Challenge, all of which have been reissued by UPA.
