The philosophical work of R. Mordechai Joseph Lainer of Izbica (1800–1854), as found in his homiletic work Mei Hashiloach, has continuously been a source of great interest. This fascination may be the result of his radical commentaries on a range of well-known Biblical sins: He deduces that both the sinner and his act of sin are in reality actualizations of deep religious truth. Or, perhaps, it is the theme of radical determinism that runs through his book as he describes even sinners as fulfilling God’s Will. This study illustrates these teachings’ authentic status, in light of reality, as a way of subject-development. This resulted due to the sharp existentialist reading of the context, a reading interwoven by questions, which deal with faith, self and identity search.
