Prior to his PhD in organisational analysis and philosophy he worked in a variety of roles in the construction, fishing and railway industries. He has conducted research in philosophy, anthropology, health, consumer studies and aesthetics. He was Harkness Scholar 2002-3, at the School of Public Health, UC Berkeley, USA.
