Wind energy is a pillar of the emerging clean energy system. The 2 volumes are the complete reference on how to configure efficient wind turbine systems. Volume 1 focuses on the components in the nacelle and the drive train. Volume 2 focuses on the generator, converter, their control, automation and maintenance.
Wind energy is a pillar of the strategy for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and stave off catastrophic climate change, but the market is under tremendous pressure to reduce cost. This results in the need for optimising any new wind turbine to maximise the return on investment and keep the technology profitable and the sector thriving. Optimisation involves selecting the best component out of many, and then optimising the system as a whole.

Wind Turbine System Design: Volume 1: Nacelles, drive trains and verification is a valuable reference for scientists, engineers and advanced students engaged in the design of wind turbines offering a systematic guide to these components. Chapters written by industry experts cover load calculation and validation, models and simulation, pitch and yaw system concepts and designs, drivetrain concepts and developments, gearboxes, hydraulic systems, lubrication, and validation. The book aims to enable readers to make informed and systematic choices in designing the best turbine for a given situation.

Wind Turbine System Design: Volume 2: Electrical systems, grid integration, control and monitoring focuses on electrical systems, grid integration, control and monitoring. Chapters cover electrical safety, generator and converter design, hardware in-loop testing, turbine control and automation, structural health monitoring, control of wind farm systems, and integration of local energy systems. Readers will be able to make systematic choices to design the best turbine system for the given situation.

Jan Wenske is a professor at the University of Bremen and deputy director of the Fraunhofer-Institute for Wind Energy Systems (IWES), Germany, since 2011. He studied mechanical engineering and received his Ph.D. in 1999 from the Institute of Electrical Engineering at the TU Clausthal. Professional assignments include the Department of Drivetrain Development and the Pre-development for forklift trucks at STILL GmbH from 2000 to 2004 as well as the Department Power Electronics Development at Jenoptik Defense & Civil Systems from 2005 to 2010. He works intensively with major industry players in wind energy technology.
