Starvation and Malnutrition: Medical Nutrition and Public Health is a carefully designed selection of chapters written by experts on emerging and controversial topics in starvation and malnutrition. Edited by a distinguished nutritional scientist and an experienced medical provider, the book is a timely contribution to the field. In addition to addressing etiologies at a high degree of resolution, it introduces and evaluates emerging and controversial interventions across the age spectrum. Dietary interventions, such as the amino acid metabolite, hydroxymethylbutyrate (HMB), L-Arginine, L-Glutamine, omega-3 fatty acids, beta-glucan, and a spectrum of food-derived bioactives are covered relative to restoration of age-appropriate nutritional status and functionality.

Finally, a series of special topics, including refeeding syndromes and their management is detailed for applications in breastfeeding, HIV, extended starvation or fasting, and even implications of potential nutritional toxicology. In addition, critical agricultural practices within the global community are analyzed with respect to nutrition adequacy, crop management, and a spectrum of attributes that impact the safety and availability of locally grown foods.

Roger A. Clemens is adjunct professor of pharamaceutical sciences and associate director, regulatory science program at the University of Southern California School of Pharmacy. He is an expert in pediatric nutrition, probiotics, food safety and toxicology, and food processing. Peter Pressman, MD, MS, FACN is Vice President, Medicine Public Health & Nutrition at The Daedalus Foundation, Alexandria, Virginia, and Director of Medical Operations at PolyScience Consulting in Chatsworth, California. He is a graduate of Bowdoin College, the University of Chicago, and Northwestern University Medical School, and was trained at the University of Wisconsin and Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center. After serving as Assistant Professor of Medicine, Director of Educational Programs of the Pacific Center for Health Policy & Ethics, and Associate Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program, all at University of Southern California/Keck School of Medicine, he attended at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, and later deployed in the Developing World as a Naval Medical Officer. Dr. Pressman is a reviewer for the Journal of Food Science, the Journal of Food & Chemical Toxicology, and serves on the Editorial Board of Toxicology Research and Application. Through Summer of 2016, Pressman was the Aspire Food Group Visiting Scientist in the Horch Neuroscience Laboratory at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Co-Author of Dr. Ted A. Loomis's Essentials of Toxicology and a Postdoctoral Graduate of Vanderbilt Univ., 1968, A. Wallace Hayes, has had quite an extensive career in Toxicology Research and Development. Some of his many honors received include: NASA Predoctoral Fellowship, Auburn University, 1964-66, NATO Senior Fellowship, Weybridge, England, 1977, President, American Society of Microbiology, Southeastern Branch, 1974 and Wisdom Hall of Fame, 1991. A few of his current Editorial Posts include: Human and Experimental Toxicology, Target Organ Toxicity Series, Founding Editor, Comments on Toxicology, and Editorial Board Member on Environmental Toxin Series, Food and chemical Toxicology, Methods in Toxicology and Journal of Quality Assurance. During his career, Mr. Hayes has been a member to over seventy different professional committees, boards, and organization throughout the world.
