With the increasing use of unearthed power supply systems (IT systems), the selection of suitable monitoring equipment is a question of great importance. The combination of an unearthed power supply system (IT system) and insulation monitoring opens the road to a special protective technique. The various techniques used in the German Federal Republic are compared to those in the United States. The historical development of the protective conductor system and its application are also described. The various measuring techniques used by this insulation monitoring devices are discussed, and the pertinent regulations are quoted.

Dipl.-Ing. Wolfgang Hofheinz, graduate engineer, born in 1947 in Wissenbach/ Dillkreis and trained in electromechanics (electronics) at German Philips GmbH in Wetzlar, study of electrical engineering at the University of Gießen, speciality com-munications engineering. From 1972 employed as engineer by AEG in Heilbronn, speciality semiconductor circuit development. Since 1975 member of the management of the Bender Company, Grünberg (Oberhessen). Member of international and national electrotechnical commissions.
