She can see the future, but can she change it?

Paris, 1793. In the notorious Conciergerie Prison, Marie Antoinette is having her cards read. What solace can the tarot give her now, in the midst of the Reign of Terror, when outside her cell the mob is baying for her blood?

Kate, a young Irishwoman whose fortunes have seen her travel from maid to closest confidant of Mademoiselle Lenormand, the infamous Tarot Reader of Versailles, sees the Queen of France's cards and knows what's in store for her. As the French Revolution is consumed by frenzied violence, Kate must use all her wiles to ensure that Marie Antoinette's fate doesn't become her own nor that of her mentor. But what turn of the Wheel of Fortune led a revolutionary Irishwoman to become entangled in French royalist plots? And what forces - supernatural or otherwise - can help her protect an innocent child from a cruel and unjust fate?

Set against the background of the French Revolution and the Great Rebellion in Ireland, this is a novel of fate and free will, where allegiances and romances can be forged or broken by the turn of a card.

Inspired by the true story of Marie-Anne Adelaide Lenormand, the most infamous Tarot Reader in France.

Anya Bergman became interested in the witch trials of Vardø and the vivid folk tales of the north while living in Norway. Travelling to the Steilneset memorial, in which Louise Bourgeois and Peter Zumthor commemorated those persecuted as witches, she became fascinated by their stories. Now resident in Ireland, she is currently undertaking a PhD by Published Works at Edinburgh Napier University in Scotland, where she also lectures as well as tutoring for Jericho Writers. The Tarot Reader of Versailles is her second novel.
