Delve into their doomsday imaginations and find out what the future holds in poems, stories, games, activities, and illustrated omens of what’s to come. Fifteen young editors, mentored by children’s author Oliver Phommavanh and publishing industry professionals, have assembled a collection of armageddon-themed fiction unlike anything you’ve ever seen.
The collection includes 15 intrepid tales and poems written by young Australian writers between the ages of 8 and 12, alongside a hilarious contribution from Andy Griffiths.
100 Story Building books are edited by energetic and diverse panel of young people, drawn from eight schools across Melbourne who participate in 100 Story Building’s annual Early Harvest publishing program. Each year, the editors at 100 Story Building create Australia’s only fiction book that is written and edited by kids for kids. All stories, poems, and other content in the book have been carefully selected by 11- and 12-year-olds, who curate the collection based on the interests and sensibilities of their age group. Over 12 intensive weeks, the young editors draft fun extra features, pore over hundreds of submissions, edit stories, create illustration briefs, brainstorm content and make a million difficult decisions to produce a book that showcases the creative work of their peers. 100 Story Building is Victoria’s home of storymaking and creative discovery for children and young people. Our imagination-driven literacy programs empower children to take creative risks, embrace mistakes, follow their passions and experience the joy of expression. Guest Author:Andy Griffiths is one of Australia’s most popular children’s authors. He and illustrator Terry Denton have collaborated on more than 33 bestselling books since their first title, Just Tricking, was published in 1997. In Australia, Andy and Terry’s books have sold over 10 million copies, won 80 children’s choice awards and 10 Australian Book Industry Awards—including Book of the Year for The 52-Storey Treehouse in 2015. Their much-loved Treehouse Series has been embraced by children around the world and is now published in more than 35 countries. Andy is a passionate advocate for literacy and in 2015 was awarded the Dromkeen Medal to honour his outstanding contribution to Australian children’s literature. He is also an ambassador for both The Indigenous Literacy Foundation and the Pyjama Foundation. Writing Mentor: Oliver Phommavanh loves to make people laugh, whether it’s on the page or on stage as a stand-up comedian. He also shares his passion for writing with kids, using his experience as a primary school teacher. Oliver’s books are packed with laughs, but also carry a lot of heart and authentic characters living in a multicultural Australia. Oliver’s recent books include Brain Freeze, Don’t Follow Vee and Natural Born Loser, and he is best known for Thai-riffic!, Con-nerd and The Other Christy.
