In 1909 Oxford University Press published the Scofield(r) Reference Bible, edited by Dr. C. I. Scofield. It's no understatement to say that this first-ever "study Bible," featuring scholarly notes placed beside the biblical text, took the Bible publishing world by storm. Indeed, the Scofield's success was instrumental in the establishment of Oxford's branch in the United States.
