A work of great breadth that summarizes an entire intellectual life, A Pure Theory of the Republic traverses the great questions of modern political thought. With overwhelming historical, philosophical, and juridical knowledge, a privileged political experience before and during the so-called Spanish Transition, and a thoroughgoing non-ideological stance, Antonio Garcia-Trevijano offers an illuminating solution to the current political situation in Europe (and beyond). Among its many elements, A Pure Theory of the Republic constitutes the first positive theory of a republican state. It corrects numberless ill-defined concepts, lays the foundation of a true political science, performs the most accurate and devastating criticism of the Parties State, and explains how collective freedom may be institutionally guaranteed. Divided into three distinct books, A Pure Theory of the Republic promises to be a landmark in political thought for centuries to come.
Antonio Garcia-Trevijano was born in Granada, Spain, in 1927. He has been a prominent figure of Spanish politics since the late sixties and is arguably one of the most important intellectual figures of the 20th century. His work, A Pure Theory of Democracy, also published by University Press of America, was translated into English in 2009. Miguel Rodriguez de Penaranda was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1974. He is a writer and a translator. He is the author of several books on the fields of philosophy, poetry, religion, and political theory and is the translator of A Pure Theory of Democracy.
