I am writing this book to share with you the experience and knowledge that I have accrued over the last forty years as a small unit leader in the military and in business. Doing anything for that long creates a lot of perspective. I am attempting to put that perspective to good use by blending experience and knowledge into a guide for aspiring small unit leaders. This guide is carefully grounded in common sense. Veteran s Administration statistics indicate that since the end of the Vietnam War (and the attendant end of the draft) less than seven per cent of the US population has entered the US military services. Therefore, it follows that over 90 per cent of the US population has not had the opportunity to gain the basic skills, knowledge and abilities needed to lead by way of the tried and true military model , as it is called in academia.
