Previously you could self-publish a book using CreateSpace, but this has now changed. CreateSpace and KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) have now become one service.  

KDP allow you to easily create, publish, and distribute your printed book to Amazon’s 13 eCommerce sites, which include: Amazon US, Amazon Canada, Amazon Australia, Amazon Japan, Amazon Italy, Amazon France, Amazon Germany, Amazon Spain websites for free. Amazon Mexico is coming soon.

KDP is also offering Expanded Distribution, to help you sell your paperbacks in physical bookstores in the US.

Don’t you think that is amazing for self-publishers? You can have your book sold in more than 1 country!

Publishing with a major publishing house may be a dream for some individuals. However, if you experience rejections from agents and/or a publishing house, you can bypass them simply by publishing yourself. If you simply want to maintain more profit from your writing, self-publishing is a #Winner.

The greatest benefit to self-publishing with KDP is the ability to maintain complete control of your book. You will own your copyright with Amazon’s non-exclusive agreement and have the ability to print books as needed. The process is quick and painless. In fact, I used KDP to publish the paperback version of this book.

KDP can be your partner in publishing any type of paperback. It doesn’t have to be a Non-Fiction or Fiction book. You can self-publish cookbooks, journals, coloring books, poems, children’s books, public domain works, textbooks, or art books. The opportunities are endless!

I truly believe that in this information filled world, we each have a story to share. I encourage you to start or finish that book and publish it today!

Anyone at any age can write and publish a book.

Time Required –

The amount of time required to publish on KDP ranges from 15 minutes to 1 hour, depending on how quickly you are able to navigate the site. KDP offers a guided process to help you quickly list your book.

Tips –

Having a physical book in your hand is on the comeback! Although we are surrounded with tablets and mobile phones for reading, many people still enjoy having a physical book to read.

KDP’s free tools allow authors to build and publish their paperback book the “DIY” way. The steps are simple to follow:

• Input your title, author name, ISBN number or select a FREE ISBN number
• Upload a print-ready PDF or Word document with your content.
• Upload a professional designed book cover utilizing the printed guidelines or create your own with the FREE Cover Creator. The creator allows you to use your own photos, images, logos, etc. to create a unique cover. You will find several professional templates to make the process simple. Or upload your professional designed cover utilizing the printed guidelines.
• Write your book description
• Select your BISC code for book classification
• Insert your keywords so customers and readers can find you
• Choose your distribution – Regular distribution with Amazon.com, and the other international platforms. You can also add Expanded Distribution to allow your book to be seen in bookstores, online retailers, libraries, academic institutions. Simply choose where and how you want your book to be offered.
• Check the interior format of the book with the Interior Reviewer, which allows you to see how your interior content will look as a printed book.
• Allow the software to check for any common issues or errors so you can fix them before publishing.
• Submit your book for publishing after review or request a physical copy.
• Wait a few days for approval, can take up to 4 days (I have seen approvals in as little as 24 hours)
• While you are waiting, establish your author profile on Amazon. Add headshot, bio, other pertinent information for your readers.
• Wait for the approval email. Voila! You have a published book.

Your book will be published and made available on Amazon within a few days.

How to Make Money-

In Amazon’s 2018 shareholder letter, Amazon noted there were more than 1,000 authors who earn more than $100,000 a year from publishing books. I believe the future looks bright for self-published authors to publish books and make money!

One of the key benefits to making money with KDP, is the 60-day payout. Amazon makes payment every 60 days for book sales. For example, book sales from September 1st to the end of the month are paid out at the end of November. You will receive a statement of earnings the following month, from the example listed above, a statement would be sent October 15th.

You have the ability to earn high royalties based on your list prices, which you will set. KDP applies either a 30% or 70% royalty based on the price you set for books sold on the Amazon platform, minus printing cost. Every time a sale occurs, your book is printed on demand and you receive the royalty in your dashboard with a full complete list of sales channels and quantity.

This is a great return, when considering big publishing houses pay every 3 or 6 months.

You will still need to market your book. With Amazon’s large customer base internationally, it is possible to earn sales organically. With AMS, Amazon’s ad service, you can also run ads alongside Amazon’s website for your paperback.

Although KDP is a great tool to publish your book quickly and easy, there are steps in-between my “Tips” listed above. Things also change often, so it’s important to keep up with the changes that occur.

You also have the option to enroll in KDP Select and earn more money through the Kindle Unlimited and the Kindle Owners' Lending Library.
