Saudi Arabia:
Portraits of Change, Volume 2 1970s–1980s captures a time of extraordinary economic growth and rapid
modernization, highlighting the transformative impact on the Kingdom’s
infrastructure, urban development, and social dynamics. Through a stunning
collection of historical photographs taken by Shirley Kay, a pioneering female
photographer, readers will witness the profound changes and enduring heritage
that define Saudi Arabia’s unique story.
Joy Ashworth is the founder and curator of Arabian Album, an archive dedicated to preserving historical photographs that document the Middle East’s transformation over the twentieth century. Her connection to the region began in the 1980s while working on the design of the Natural History Museum in Muscat, Oman, where she developed a deep appreciation for its landscapes, heritage, and culture. Over the ensuing decades, inspired by her friendships with photographers Cecilia Green and Shirley Kay, Ashworth began collecting and safeguarding rare images that capture a world now largely vanished. Through Arabian Album, she continues to champion the preservation and cataloguing of these visual records, ensuring their availability for future generations.
