Rock Dynamics – Experiments, Theories and Applications is a collection of scientific and technical papers presented at the Third International Conference on Rock Dynamics and Applications (RocDyn-3, Trondheim, Norway, 26-27 June 2018). The papers in the book reflect the recent developments in experiment and theory as well as engineering applications of rock dynamics. Rock dynamics studies the response of rock and rock masses under dynamic loading and during the state transition from static loading to kinetic movement. It also includes the study of engineering countermeasures to dynamic instability of rock and rock masses. The topics in the book include:

- Dynamic theories
- Numerical simulation
- Propagation of stress waves
- Dynamic tests of rock
- Stability of underground openings under dynamic loading
- Rockburst
- Seismic monitoring
- Dynamic rock support
- Blasting
- Earthquake-related rock structure damage, etc.

Applications, such as rockburst, dynamic rock support, seismic monitoring, blasting and earthquake-related rock structure damage, are paid special attention in Rock Dynamics – Experiments, Theories and Applications. The papers, from specialists both from mining and tunnelling branches, discuss commonly interested dynamic issues. Their experience and knowledge in the application of rock dynamics are extremely valuable for all academics, engineers and professionals who work with rock dynamics.

Professor Charlie Chunlin Li is an engineering graduate with degrees of BEng and MEng in geological engineering and PhD in rock mechanics. He was a research associate at Luleå university of Technology for 7 years and a ground control engineer in the Kristineberg mine of Sweden for more than 4 years. He was the Chief Technology Officer of a university spin-out innovation company, Dynamic Rock Support AS, for 4 years. He has held the professorship of rock mechanics in the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) since 2004. He is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences (NTVA). He is the Vice President for Europe (2015-2019) in the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM). Dr. Li has more than 30 years’ experience in rock mechanics and ground control for mining and civil engineering. His major interests are failure mechanics of rock and rock masses, stability analysis, theory and practice of static and dynamic rock support. He has profound knowledge in rockbolts and other types of rock support elements. He invented a dynamic rock support device, the D-Bolt, which has been using world-widely in burst-prone deep mines and deep tunnels. His published a book, "Rockbolting", in 2017. Xing Li is a graduate with degrees of BEng and MEng in mechanics. He was a research assistant and PhD candidate at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) of Switzerland from 2013 to 2015. He transferred his PhD candidature to Monash University of Australia in 2015 and is set to obtain his PhD degree in rock mechanics at the end of 2017. His research interests are rock dynamics, numerical manifold method, spalling and rockburst. Zongxian Zhang is currently the Professor of Mining Engineering and Director of Research Center at Oulu Mining School, University of Oulu, Finland. He got his Bachelor, Master and PhD degree from Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology, University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB), and Luleå University of Technology (LTU), respectively. He worked at USTB from 1986 to 1997, LTU from 1997 to 2002, Swedish mining company LKAB from 2002 to 2013, and the University Centre in Svalbard from 2013 to 2016. For about 35 years he has been working in the field related to Rock Dynamics and its applications in mining engineering. His research fields include effects of loading rates on rock fracture and fragmentation, stress waves in rock, rock fragmentation by blasting, rock drilling, mining methods, mining safety, ore recovery and dilution, vibration control, rock support, seismic events and rock bursts. His publications include 3 books and 70 articles. His research is mostly included in his book "Rock Fracture and Blasting: Theory and Applications" published in 2016.
