This book reviews the machining of titanium and nickel-base alloys, which are employed extensively in the aerospace industry, and provides examples of their use. Providing much-needed information on the manufacturing properties of today's new materials, especially those being developed for use in aeronautical vehicles such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), it features a collection of chapters written by leading international experts in the field. It has been written in response to the request by manufacturers such as Boeing, Cessna, Spirit Aerosystems, Rolls-Royce, Pratt and Whitney, GE Aviation, United Technologies, Textron, General Atomics, and Northrup Grumman for specific, practical data to help them produce the next generation of aircraft. This single volume reviewing the state of the art in machining technology for aerospace applications is of great interest to researchers. It is also a valuable resource for professional engineers, helping them address the problems associated with difficult-to-machine aerospace alloys.

Prof. Mark J. Jackson, PhD, PE began his engineering career in 1983 when he studied for his O.N.C. part I examinations and his first-year apprenticeship-training course in mechanical engineering. After graduating with a Master of Engineering (M. Eng.) degree with Distinction under the supervision of Professor Jack Schofield, M.B.E., Doctor Jackson subsequently read for a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.) degree at Liverpool in the field of materials engineering focusing primarily on microstructure-property relationships in vitreous-bonded abrasive materials under the supervision of Professor Benjamin Mills. In 2002, he became associate professor of mechanical engineering and faculty associate in the Center for Manufacturing Research, and Center for Electric Power at Tennessee Technological University (an associated university of Oak Ridge National Laboratory), and a faculty associate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Dr. Jackson was the academic adviser to the Formula SAE Team at Tennessee Technological University. In 2004 he moved to Purdue University as Associate Professor and Associate Department Head for Research in the Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology, to Saint-Gobain High Performance Materials in 2011 as Research Leader of Grinding Science, to Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology in Boston as MET Chairperson and to Kansas State University in 2013 as Professor, Department Head, and McCune and Middlekauff Faculty Fellow. He has authored and co-authored over 150 publications in archived journals and refereed conference proceedings, has edited a book on 'microfabrication and nanomanufacturing', and has guest edited a number of peer-refereed journals on aspects of materials science and manufacturing technology. He is the editor of the Journal of Manufacturing Technology Research and has edited a number of books on manufacturing concerned with machining and grinding technology. Professor Álisson Rocha Machado worked for 31 years at Federal University of Uberlandia, at the State of Minas Gerais in Brazil. Although he continues with activities at the Mechanical Engineering Graduate Program of this university, in February 2016 he joined the Mechanical Engineering Graduate Program at Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná, Curitiba-PR, Brazil. He is a Professor of Manufacturing Engineering. He received his BSc in Mechanical Engineering (1979) from Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil; his M.Sc. (1982) from the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Florianópolis, SC, Brazil and his Ph.D. (1991) from the University of Warwick, Coventry, England, United Kingdom. In 1995/96, he took a one-year sabbatical at Warwick University, UK. He is an expert on the machining of materials with focus on aerospace and automotive components and undertakes numerous research and consultancy projects for Fiat Powertrain Technology, Gerdau, Villares Metals, Fundição Tupy, OSG Sulamericana de Ferramentas Ltda, Sandvik do Brasil S.A., CBA, EMBRAER, among others. All his research activities are geared towards seeking solutions to current industrial problems and have so far attracted substantial Brazilian (federal and state) government and industrial funding. Professor Machado is recognised as an expert on advances in machining processes and is regularly participates at international conferences all over the world. He has authored or co-authored 1 book, 8 book chapters, and over 400 publications in high impact international journals and conferences. He has supervised 30 Master's degree students and 17 Doctoral students. His expertise and contributions in the field of machining have afforded him many collaborative works with important Institutions in Brazil, Europe and in the Americas.
