John Armitage shows how the ideas and theories of continental philosophers Nietzsche, Heidegger, Levinas, Bataille, Gadamer and Adorno, play an important role in the understanding of luxury practices, revealing the actual and potential extent of modern and contemporary critical luxury studies.
Discussing contemporary case studies representing luxury including the longing for luxury perfume, the transgression of superyachts and the consumer experience of videogames, Armitage raises challenging questions about the contemporary world of luxury and delineates the continental philosophy of luxury.
John Armitage is Emeritus Professor of Media Arts at Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton. John’s research interests include luxury and visual culture, new media art, continental philosophy, and the critical theory of technology. He is the author of Luxury and Visual Culture (2020) and Luxury Philosophy (2025).
