Thinking with Castoriadis explores the work of the Greek-French philosopher Cornelius Castoriadis who developed a ground-breaking philosophy of imagination and social creation—a theory of how societies come into being. The volume explores the many-sided implications of Castoriadis’ social thought and the way it intersects with and diverges from other major currents of social theory and philosophy: civilizational, urbanist, Hellenist, meta-historical, hermeneutical, phenomenological, ontological, antinomical, and Kantian. Contributors to the volume are long-time participants in an annual conference on Castoriadis’ work that ran for 15 years in Sydney and Melbourne.

Peter Murphy is Adjunct Professor of Social Sciences at La Trobe University and formerly Professor of Arts and Society at James Cook University. His books include Stranger Cities: Australian Creation and the Ambidextrous Mind, a Profile of Portal Modernity (2023), The Political Economy of Prosperity: Successful Societies and Productive Cultures (2020), Universities and Innovation Economies: The Creative Wasteland of Post-Industrial Society (2015) and Civic Justice: From Greek Antiquity to the Modern World (2001).
