Structured around five thematic sections on gender issues, religion and sectarianism, racism and human rights, refugees and statelessness, and socio-economic and political upheavals, the textbook addresses some of the most pressing issues in the Gulf today. Each excerpt is carefully selected with attention to equity, diversity, and inclusion, and is accompanied by activities that promote engagement with Modern Standard Arabic. Adopting a multiliteracies approach, the textbook incorporates a range of multimodal texts and emphasizes not only the development of advanced language skills, but also critical thinking, interpretation, and the ability to construct and (re)design meaning across different modes of communication.

Jonas Elbousty holds an MPhil and a PhD from Columbia University, USA. He is an academic, writer, and literary critic and translator. He teaches in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at Yale University, USA, where he served as the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations for seven years. He is currently the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Council on Middle East Studies and oversees the Yale Summer Study Abroad Program in Rabat, Morocco.
