Landmark book of sensational images from Andris Apse, world-renowned New Zealand photographer.

In his first new book in eight years, Andris Apse showcases some of the wildest and most remote spots of southern New Zealand, from the depths of the wild West Coast to the mostly inaccessible Subantarctic islands and as far south as Antarctica. With his exceptional eye and the skill, planning and patience to wait for the exact right moment, Andris captures stunning landscapes in all their moody magnificence.

As well as nearly 100 images there is also a charming introduction and extended captions by Andris describing some memorable moments while collecting these images, plus lyrical essays by Laurence Fearnley and Dr Hinemoa Elder, on the meaning of some of these wilderness places to them. A very special inclusion is an essay that was gifted to Andris by his dear friend, the late great Keri Hulme, on the Maori perspective on Te Rua o Te Moko/Fiordland.

Of his passion for wild, untamed wilderness places Andris says 'As human beings living on a now crowded planet, we need to know that there are these nature and wildlife sanctuaries. Merely knowing they exist cleanses the soul but also reminds us of the damage we have done to our planet.'

Andris Apse is one of New Zealand's leading landscape photographers. During a career spanning more than thirty years, he has won many major awards, and is acknowledged as one of the finest wilderness photographers in the world. His work has been reproduced in the New York Times, National Geographic, New Zealand Geographic, Time and Newsweek, among many other publications. Apse has also published an array of books, including the phenomenally successful New Zealand Landscapes, which has sold more than 150,000 copies, Pounamu- The Jade of New Zealand (with Russell Beck and Maika Mason), Spirit of the South, a stunning tribute to the South Island, and the pocket-sized Southern New Zealand Landscapes. In 2010, Apse was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM). He is also an Honorary Fellow of the New Zealand Professional Photographers Association and an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers. He lives with his partner Lynne at Diamond Harbour, near Christchurch.
