In September 1975 Kevin Borman left London on an overland bus bound for Kathmandu, via Athens and Istanbul, the deserts of southern Iran, the heights of Afghanistan's Hindu Kush, the teeming life and ancient sights of India, and the soaring drama of the Nepalese peaks. After the bus trip ended, he and his partner travelled on through Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, using public transport and reaching Bali in February 1976. His journal, reproduced here, recalls the very different world of half a century ago, before the era of the internet and mobile phones, when contact was by letter or aerogramme and travel was a more innocent and maybe a more unpredictable affair.
