Sarah Schumann (1933–2019) zählt zu den einflussreichsten Künstlerinnen der bundesrepublikanischen Nachkriegszeit und gilt als Schlüsselfigur der neuen Berliner Frauenbewegung in den 70er Jahren. Im Zentrum ihres Frühwerkes stehen die „Schockcollagen“, die sie zwischen 1954 und 1964 aus Zeitschriftenabbildungen, illustrierten Büchern und eigenen Fotografien fertigte. Zunächst meist als dadaistisch-surrealistische Spielerei verklärt, wurde bald schon die feministisch-emanzipatorische Themen- und Motivwelt Schumanns erkannt. In diesem Band sind über 140 noch erhaltene Schockcollagen versammelt und zum ersten Mal zusammenhängend publiziert. Texte des Herausgebers Christoph Keller und des Historikers Vojin Saša Vukadinović ordnen die
Arbeiten in den größeren kunsthistorischen Kontext ein.
Das Buch erscheint parallel zu einer Überblicksausstellung zu Sarah Schumanns Frühwerk in der Galerie Meyer Riegger im September 2025 in Berlin.
Christoph Keller ist Kunstverleger, Buchgestalter, Ausstellungsmacher und Schnapsbrenner. Vojin Saša Vukadinović ist Historiker, Publizist und Geschlechterforscher. Er war ein persönlicher Freund von Sarah Schumann. Sarah Schumann (1933–2019) is one of the most influential artists in postwar West Germany and is regarded as a key figure in the new women’s movement in 1970s Berlin. At the heart of her work are the “shock collages” she made between 1954 and 1964 using images from magazines, illustrated books, and her own photographs. Typically romanticized at first as a flirtation with Dadaism and surrealism, Schumann’s imagery was soon recognized as tackling feminist, emancipatory themes. This book brings together over 140 extant shock collages and publishes them for the first time as a coherent body of work. Texts by editor Christoph Keller and historian Vojin Saša Vukadinović locate the works in their broader art historical context.
