Chapter 1: Selectivity and Administrative Control

How many people have wasted their lives without realizing what they were losing? How much have you wasted on pointless suffering, foolish joy, hunger, and social amusements? More importantly, how little of your own life have you left? You will come to realize that you are passing away before your time! r time! To be able to say "noon" is one of the most challenging things to accomplish in life. Invitations, requests, commitments, and the things that everyone else is doing are all things that you should be aware of.

Even more challenging is the task of denying some feelings that consume a lot of time, such as wrath, enthusiasm, distraction, obsession, and passion. In anyone of these impulses seem significant in and of themselves, but when they run unchecked, they become commitments just like any other other. In the event that you do not exercise caution, they are the very impositions that will cause your life to become overburdened and consumed. Have you ever thought about how you could reclaim some of your time and feel less occupied? To begin, you should become familiar with the power of the word "nonono!" This includes phrases such as "No, thank you," "No, I'm not going to get caught up in that,"

Doing so could require a lot of effort. effort. effort. However, the more you decline the things that aren't important to you, the more you'll be able to accept the things that are important to you. This will allow you to live and enjoy life. life that you desire. The only things that are required of you are the following: the certainty of judgment in the present moment; the activity for the common good in the present moment; and an attitude of thankfulness in the present moment for whatever comes your way. Marcus Aurelius' words are MEDITATIONS, 9.6 perception, action, and will. These are the three disciplines of Stoicism that overlap with one another but are equally important (in addition to the organization of this book and the trip that you have just started over the course of a year).

Without a doubt, there are further aspects to the philosophy, and we could spend an entire day discussing the distinctive views held by the numerous Stoic branches: “This is the way that Heraclitus conceived of thingZeno thought that he was from the city of Citium, which is located in Cyprus. prus. On the other hand, would such information actually be of any use to you in your day-to-day How much value does trivia provide clarity? Instead, the following little reminder will summarize the three most important aspects of Stoic philosophy that you should carry with you every day and incorporate into every decision you make: Keep your views under control. Ensure that your actions are directed appropriately. Be willing to accept the things that are beyond your control.

This is all that is required of us. On January 5th, LPleasePlease explain your intentionsintentions. You should direct all your efforts towards a specific goal, and ensure they remain focused on it. Individuals are not disturbed by activities; rather, they are driven insane by their erroneous beliefs about things.things.One of the 48 laws of power is titled "Plan All the Way to the End," and it is found in Seneca's book "On the Tranquilly of Mind" (12.5 AD). "You will not be overwhelmed by circumstances, and you will know when to stop if you plan to go to the end," writes Robert Greene. "Planning to the end will help you. “By thinking far ahead, you may help predict the future and gently lead fortune in the right direction. According to The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, the second habit is to start with a goal in mind to guide your actions.

Having a goal in mind does not ensure that you will achieve it; in fact, no Stoic would tolerate the presumption that you will. On the other hand, not having a goal in mind is a certainty that you will not achieve it. The Stoics attribute oiêsis, also known as "false conceptions," not only to soul disturbances but also to chaotic and dysfunctional lifestyles and operations. How are you going to know what to do on a daily basis if your efforts are not directed towards a cause or purpose? How are you going to determine what you should say yes to and what you should say no to? You will never be able to determine when you have had enough,

When you have attained your goal, or when you have fallen off course if you have never defined what those things are. In response to your question, the answer is no. As a result, you do not have any direction in your life, and as a result, you are driven into failure, or even worse, into crazy.6th of January, TWHAT, WHERE, WHO, AND WHAT, AND WHY If a person is unaware of the existence of the cosmos, they cannot know where they are. There is no way for a person to know who they are or what the universe is if they do not have a clear understanding of their life's purpose. It is impossible for a person to understand why they are at this location if they are unaware of any of these things.

What should we say about people who seek or shun the admiration of others who are unaware of where or who they are? Marcus Aurelius' MEDITATIONS, on page 8.52He was a comedian who passed away, and throughout his performance, Mitch Edberg would tell a humorous anecdote. As he was about to do an interview on the air, a radio DJ approached him and said, "So, who are you?" At that very moment, he had to ask himself, "Is this guy really deep, or did I drive to the wrong station? “How often do we encounter simple questions like "Who are you?" "What do you do?" or "Where are you from?"? We do not bother with anything more than a cursory answer because we perceive it to be a question that is shallow, if we bother to examine it at all.

But even with a pistol to their heads, the majority of respondents were unable to provide a response that was very significant. How about you? Have you given yourself the opportunity to have a better understanding of who you are and what you believe in? On the other hand, are you excessively preoccupied with pursuing things that are not significant, imitating the wrong influences, and following pathways that are unsatisfactory, unfulfilling, or nonexistent? The seventh of January there are seven distinct functions of the mind. It is the exercise of choice, rejection, craving, repulsion, preparation, purpose, and acquiescence that is the true function of the mind. In such a case, what might contaminate and obstruct the mind's ability to work properly?

"Everything but its own shady choices and actions." 4.11.6–7 according to EPICTETUS, DISCOURSES Permit me to break down each of those duties in more detail: Choice—to act and think in the appropriate manner Refusal—of the temptation oar yearning—to improve oneself Repulsion towards negativity, negative influences, and things that are not true. Preparation—for whatever may occur in the future, or for whatever may come next Aim, which serves as both our guiding philosophy and top priority The definition of assent is to be free of deceit about what is within our control and what is outside of it (and to be prepared to accept the latter). This is the purpose for which the mind was created. Our responsibility is to ensure that it does, and we must consider everything else to be either pollution or corruption.

The eighth of January PERCEIVING OUR CONDITIONS OF ADDICTION It is necessary for us to give up many things that we are hooked on, even when we think they are beneficial. In that case, bravery will be lost, which is something that has to be tested on a regular basis. With this, greatness of spirit would be lost, and it cannot stand out unless it disdains as small what the public considers to be the most desirable. Seneca, Moral Letters, 74.12b–13 ba It is not uncommon for things that we assume to be harmless pleasures to develop into full-blown addictions. In the morning, we begin with a cup of coffee, and before long, we discover that we just cannot begin the day without it.

We check our email because it is required by our profession, and before long, we begin to feel the phantom buzz of the phone in our pocket every few seconds. Soon, these seemingly innocuous routines will be in charge of our lives. The little compulsions and impulses that we have not only contribute to the erosion of our independence and sovereignty, but they also obscure our ability to see clearly. Although we believe that we are in charge, are we really? In the words of one person who has struggled with addiction, it is when we have "lost the freedom to abstain." Let's take back that freedom, will we? Your addiction may take on a variety of forms, including: A soda? Is it drugs? Complaining about something? Or gossip? How about the Internet? Are you biting your fingernail?

On the other hand, you need to restore the capacity to abstain since it contains your lucidity and your ability to exercise self-control. The 9th of January WHAT WE CAN CONTROL AND WHAT WE CAN'T "We have the ability to control certain things, but we can't control others." In summary, we are responsible for managing our own opinions, choices, desires, aversions, and all other aspects of our lives. Our body, our possessions, our reputation, our position, and, to put it another way, everything that is not of our own making are not within our control. In addition, the things that are within our control are, by their very nature, unrestricted, unfettered, and unobstructed, whereas the things that are not under our control are feeble, servile, may be impeded, and are not our own.
