This sixth fascicle deals with an area which for 4500 years, since the journeys of the Egyptians of the 5th Dynasty to Punt, has been known to the outside world. It records 1322 archaeological and historical sites along the Sudanese coastal area and hinterland covering the period between the palaeolithic age and the 19th century AD. The bibliography also includes related sources of Greek, Roman and Arab historiographs and comprises, besides material from archives, about 950 titles and 135 ancient and modern maps. In order to widen the field of studies contributions of scholars to the geology and ethnography of the area are added. The description of sites is supplemented by a glossary, a list of abbreviations and indices as well as by special chapters dealing with the history of exploration and events in the area and 10 distribution maps.
Line drawings provide layouts of sites and details, such as charts leading to the identification of localities named by ancient writers, drawings presenting information of grave-types, gold mines of Pharaonic, Ptolemaeic and Arabic activities, and more, and facilitate the supervision and study of the historical records on this border region of Northern Africa.
