Map of Cumberland originally published in 1611 by John Speed, digitally re-mastered from an antique original and printed onto photographic quality media. Supplied flat in a polypropylene sleeve and back board, the 16" x 12" (approx. 406 mm x 305 mm) print can be removed from the protective sleeve for framing or retained in the sleeve.
A plan of Carlisle is illustrated along with a legend, in the bottom right corner of the map. On its left is a depiction and history of a battle between the Romans and the Picts,of which there were many in this county. Hadrian's Wall, then called the Pict's Wall, is shown running along the northern border of Cumberland, and a history of it is given in the top right hand corner. To illustrate further this county's links with the Roman Empire, on the map can be found depictions of a Roman coin, and six examples of Roman altars that had been recently excavated around the time. Four coats of arms of the Earls of Carlisle are shown on the map, and all the rivers, bridges, castles, forests, hills and settlements of the county are also shown on this fantastic piece of artwork.
